Putting and Choking
By Mark Grove
How can it be that you can drive that little white ball 250 to 300 yards, yet try and drop a simple short putt and you fail miserably. Putting is actually tougher than driving, and I keep saying practice, practice, practice. Before I go any further, I will reiterate what I've said in previous articles and will continue to. A combination of practice on your own is vital along with taking lessons from a local golf pro will do wonders for your short game. Keep on reading golf magazines like Golf Digest and use parts of a pros putting technique to complement your own -- gives you a double whammy in your efforts to progress your whole game. Learning to control and isolate certain muscle groups when putting will also be of benefit. Controlling your hands and upper arms and shoulders will go along way to keeping your putting technique moving using a good rolling technique in your stroke. By practicing your putts, you won't miss as many short putts or money putts, for top amatuers and pros. As a rule you gain more confidence. Then when you do choke you shrug it off and move on to the next shot. Your mental grit will climb by practicing your putts consistently. You can take your golfing goals and set them higher each tournament or outing on the links. Putting ---- practice on a regular basis is more important than learning just the mechanics and being so mechanical, you don't have the feel for the shot. You'll choke constantly, and talent will only take you so far. Look at Tiger. I rest my case.
