Even the top pro Golfers slump badly

Even The Top Pros have it rough

By Mark Grove

Tiger hasn't won a Major since 2002 and Mike Weir didn't make the cut at The Masters after winning last years Green jacket. Alot of the sports media and golf fans especially expect the top tour players to win the majority of the tourneys their in. When they don't they think something's wrong with the game. Get real armchair golfers, it's not going to happen.

You can have a monster drive like a John Daly -- and if your short game is crap, you're literally going down for the 3 par count. I always get a laugh when sports media says that Tiger should work on his putting and wedge shots more. As if he doesn't realize that! Be Prepared to Fail: Most pro golfers are lucky if they win one in ten tournaments or even 20 for most. Golf is definitely a game of trial and error, mainly error. Anything from your long game to your putting has to be constantly practiced til your hands ache, not necessarily bleed. Like I said in an earlier article, your mechanics don't need to be perfect, but improving your golfing "chops" so to speak -- a musicians term for great playing ability and determination. Think about how many times it took a top pro to achieve a par 72 round when they first started. Most golfers will never achieve that goal. Hell there are times when a pro slumps and struggles to hit for par and make the cut to boot. This is not meant to discourage scratch golfers from pursing the golf game they love so dearly. This is to show you what it takes to be not just a satisfactory golfer, but a golfer who's long and short game combined take their golfing stroke ability to a solid handicap or level they thought they would never achieve. Becoming a great pro or amatuer takes some skill and talent, but the majority of your game is just plain hard work, goal setting and never quitting. That's it. There's no great untold secret about becoming a great golfer. You can have all the talent and theory knowledge about golf, but if it doesn't translate into results on the links or thinking that natural talent takes you where you want to go, forget it. I'd rather see a scratch golfer who works his butt off and works his way up to q-school and becomes a regular on the tour and come in the top 20 or 30 most tournaments, and makes the cut regularly. That's Better than a pro who wins one and struggles for years just to make the cut. All aspects of your golf game are important along with enjoying the game. Keep striving.
